Barefoot eLearning: A Name Inspired by a Heartwarming Story

Have you ever wondered why our eLearning platform is called Barefoot? Our name has a rich and inspiring story behind it that we’d like to share with you.

In China during the 1960s, there was no organised medical infrastructure in rural areas. When people fell ill, they often stayed at home and relied on traditional remedies. But if their condition worsened, they might seek medical help from someone who wasn’t trained or qualified to provide it.

In response to this healthcare crisis, the Chinese government launched the Barefoot Chinese Doctor training programme. These “barefoot doctors” were paramedics who travelled from village to village, teaching someone in each commune to be a Barefoot Doctor. They provided basic medical care and education, helping to improve the health and wellbeing of rural communities.

At Barefoot eLearning, we take inspiration from the spirit of the Barefoot Chinese Doctor programme.
